Linking Math with Art
Through the Elements of Design

One-Minute Faces

Art Element: line
Art Techniques: blind countour drawing
Math Vocabulary & Concepts: minute; time, space, proportion

Students will draw a face in one minute using one continuous line, without looking at the paper. Before starting the activity, we list some activities that can be completed in one minute, then I have students estimate the duration of a minute. I model the procedure first with two different students to emphasize that the drawing is done without looking at the paper or lifting the marker. After they have done one drawing, I have them nalyze their drawing to determine whether they need to work faster, slower, bigger, smaller, with more or less detail, etc. Then the students rotate and draw someone else's face. I have each student do at least three drawings, then choose their favorite to mount on construction paper.
