Linking Math with Art
Through the Elements of Design

Line Landscapes

Art Elements: line, shape, pattern, texture
Art Techniques: contour drawing
Math Vocabulary & Concepts: parallel lines, line segments; one-half

After an outside observation of local land forms, students look at pictures of a variety of landscapes. We talk about the different shapes and lines in the landscape pictures, and especially how the lines and shapes relate and intersect with each other. Students lightly draw mountain contours and outline shapes of trees, water forms, rocks, and other landscape objects with a pencil, then trace over the lines with a black Sharpie. Then they fill approximately one-half of the closed shapes with parallel lines, hatched or cross-hatched lines, or small patterns to create texture.
