Linking Math with Art
Through the Elements of Design

Textured Squares

Art Elements: shape, pattern, texture
Art Techniques: drawing
Math Vocabulary & Concepts: square, array, pattern

First students make three different shape designs, then they choose one to replicate on sixteen different squares. They fill each of the sixteen squares with a different pattern using the same color, or the same pattern with a different color, or use different patterns while showing continuity in some way. This can also be done as a collaborative project, with each student in the class doing only one small square to add to a class-size array.
