Linking Math with Art
Through the Elements of Design

Elements of Design Compositions

Art Elements: point, line, shape, color, texture, pattern, space
Art Techniques: drawing
Math Vocabulary & Concepts: point, line, shape, parallel, patterning

This activity is taken from Drawing With Children by Mona Brookes. Students follow verbal directions to create "Kandinsky-like" compositions using all the elements of design. Once all the points and lines are finished, students are asked to color in the spaces any way they want, as long as one space is filled with a pattern and one space is filled with parallel lines, and that they leave about half the space white.
