'Matisse' Collages
I saw these in a classroom where I was visiting so I can't take any credit for thinking them up. I immediately brought the idea back to my own class and they produced these.
On a 9x12 background, students arrange and glue random, overlapping rectangles of different colors and sizes. These rectangles are from the same warm or cool tones as the background. Then a layer of cut-out designs and shapes in complimentary colors are glued on top of and overlapping the rectangles.
